A number of changes mark the beginning of 2004 for Chrysler's
minivan. To begin with, the Town & Country is now the
sole minivan in the family. The Voyager has been discontinued,
now finding itself as a base regular length Town & Country
model.
The rest of the lineup consists of extended length models.
There are other new features for 2004, including new interior
cloth fabric, new interior colors and new exterior color
offerings. Plus, the base sound system has been upgraded-it
is now an AM/FM radio with a CD player.
Available Models
The 2004 Chrysler Town & Country is offered in five
models: base, LX, eX, Touring and Limited. Touring and Limited
models are covered in a separate review.
Interior Features
The 2004 Chrysler Town & Country is a roomy minivan,
with plenty of space for cargo and passengers. All models
seat seven passengers.
The standard package of the 2004 Chrysler Town & Country
consists of a number of convenience items. Power mirrors,
windows and door locks, front air conditioning, remote keyless
entry, an AM/FM/CD player, a digital clock, visor mirrors
and a rear defogger are just part of the list.
The majority of premium options are reserved for LX and
eX models. A rear-seat video entertainment system is one,
particularly useful with kids on long, boring trips. With
eX models, you can also secure a navigation system.
Exterior Features
A power liftgate and power operation for one or both sliding
side doors is standard on all but base and LX models.
Performance
The front-wheel drive 2004 Chrysler Town & Country is
able to get up to speed quite nicely. With base and LX models,
this is due to a 3.3-liter V6 engine. It is mated to 4-speed
automatic transmission, and generates 180 horsepower at
5000 rpm and 210 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
The eX model features more get-up and go. It uses a 3.8-liter
V6 engine that produces 215 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 245
lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
The eX model also comes with standard traction control,
given it added stability on the road.
Safety and Security
All but the base model have antilock brakes. Standard features
for all models include driver and passenger multi-stage
airbags that inflate with force appropriate to the severity
of impact, the LATCH child seat system and an automatic
transaxle brake-park interlock.
