2004 sees Dodge's Durango get a redesign that will surely make the competition shudder. What now rolls off the production line is a formidable midsize sport utility vehicle with the most power in its class and seating for seven.

Not only is the 2004 Dodge Durango powerful and nimble, it is also very large for the segment. The new Durango really hit a growth spurt, arriving in 2004 3 inches longer in wheelbase, 7 inches longer overall, almost 5 inches wider and nearly 400 lbs heavier than its predecessor.

That means more interior space, and a need for more power. Dodge fulfilled that need with two new engines, one boasting HEMI strength.

Available Models
The 2004 Dodge Durango is offered in three trims: ST, SLT and Limited.

Interior Features
The seating arrangement is as follows: ST models have two rows of seats for five-passenger capacity. SLT and Limited have a third row to seat up to seven. Their third row drops flat to the floor and is available in a 60/40 split folding design.

The standard features are nice, but you'd have to say the options are nicer. Leather upholstery is standard on the Limited, optional on SLT models.

Other available features include adjustable brake and accelerator pedals, rear DVD entertainment, satellite radio and Chrysler's UConnect, which uses the audio system as a hands-free, wireless link to any cell phone in the vehicle. With it, you can completely focus on driving.

Exterior Features
A sunroof is available for the first time in 2004. The Durango's headlamp covers hide dual lights, while the side-view mirrors were crafted in a wind tunnel to reduce noise from wind turbulence.

Performance
The 2004 Dodge Durango can be configured as a rear-wheel drive model or as one with all-wheel drive. Rear-wheel drive models receive a new 3.7-liter V6 engine. It produces up to 210 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 235 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.

All-wheel drive models combine their surefootedness with a 4.7-liter V8 engine. It ups things a little with 230 horsepower at 4600 rpm and 290 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm.
Finally, there's an optional HEMI engine that basically leaves the other two in the dust. It is a 5.7-liter V8, and it can dish out 330 horsepower at 5400 rpm and 370 lb-ft of torque at 4200 rpm.

Equipped with the HEMI, the Durango can tow up to 8,950 lbs.

Safety and Security
Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard. Curtain side airbags for all three rows and traction control are optional.
